The Model 1861 Enfield was a short version of the Model 1853 rifle. In the British Empire, it was used by artillery units for personal defense. During the American Civil War (1861-1865) it was also used by artillery and cavalry units, it was the second most used rifle of that war.
This weapon was very common among Confederate troops, who obtained their supplies by purchasing them from private arms dealers.
It was a black powder rifle with a caliber of 15mm (.577). This rifle had a steel barrel with a three-band bore. Holding the barrel to the stock was made with two metal clamps, so it was often called the "two-band model". The bullets used by this weapon were of the “Minié” type and were made by cutting on a large lead wire which gave them more resistance unlike traditional bullets melted in a mold.
