Before the Civil War, many models of revolvers were found on the American market. Many competed for military contracts, but few survived the rigors of the trials.
Two names remain far above the others in the collective memory: Colt and Remington. The Remington 1858 New Army was used in combat during the fiercest battles of the Civil War, such as Gettysburg, Antietam or Shiloh, and won hands down the hearts of the veterans who used it. The story claims that the quality and durability of the 1858 was far superior to that of the Colts, and that these were exchanged for 1858s when the soldiers had the opportunity: what the Colts were elegant, the Remingtons had it in reliability and robustness, essential qualities when fighting in the mud and in harsh climatic conditions.
Even today, the debate continues to know which of the two was the better revolver, proof that the passion lives on more than a century and a half later.
