Created during the Cold War, the 5.45x39mm M74 was developed to outperform the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. The AK-74 was designed around this ammunition, which has become the standard for the Russian army.
The aim was to offer a small caliber, high velocity ammunition with a flatter trajectory and reduced bulk, allowing a greater number of rounds to be carried per soldier.
This is a low-recoil caliber, with excellent accuracy.
