BSA Optics is a British company created in 1996, whose know-how dates back to the 1680s. In 1689, the reign of William III was regularly threatened with invasions and the king criticized the practice in use at the time, of buying military weapons in Holland. Under the initiative of Sir Richard Newdegate, a wealthy landowner and MP for Warwickshire, his constituents in Birmingham, most of whom were gunsmiths, were approached by the King of England for a trial order of arms. The trial turned into a contract between royalty and gunsmiths for the supply of 200 muskets a month at 17 shillings a piece. For 150 years, this trade with the arms manufacturers as a group continues. On June 7, 1861, the association of 14 master blacksmiths gave birth to the Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited. In the early 1870s, the company launched into transport with the production of bicycles with two large wheels on each side of the cyclist. This foray into the field of transport will be short-lived, the company returning to the manufacture of arms to meet the needs of the British armed forces during the Boer War (military conflict between the British and the independent states of Africa from South).
